Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7

A Mile In His Shoes

About A Mile in His Shoes:

From the director of "Angels In the Outfield" comes an inspiring story about a special boy with an amazing gift, and the coach who believed. Dean Cain and Luke Schroder star in the gmc movie based on the book "The Legend of Mickey Tussler".

Alright folks, we have a new movie for Family Movie Night!  A Mile In His Shoes is an uplifting story about a baseball coach on a quest to find the next great pitcher for his team.

On his journey, a bit of car trouble causes him to cross paths with a young man (Mickey) with an amazing arm. He also happens to have Asperger's Syndrome. The young man's father is less than excited about the prospect of his son leaving the safety of their home to face the unknown dangers of the world.

Mickey does join the team, and slowly begins to flourish with his new found success. But even as his teammates rally around him, one jealous player takes drastic measures to keep Mickey from stealing his spotlight.

Don't worry though, this is a family movie, so you know that uplifting and happy ending is on the way! I don't want to spoil the ending, but I will say that along the way, the coach makes peace with his painful past, and returns to his faith, and even Mickey's father lightens up and comes around. :)

My daughters enjoyed the movie from start to finish. Throughout the story, they (loudly) spoke out against the jealous teammate. My oldest said at least twice, "I love this movie!"

Take a sneak peek at the official trailer:

The Shadow of Your Smile - Susan May Warren

What would you do if you found yourself with the chance to 'redo' as it were, the last 20 years of your life? Would you do it all over again? What would you do differently? These were some of the questions I pondered as I read The Shadow of Your Smile.

Husband and wife Noelle and Eli Hueston are living separate lives under the same roof. The reasons are not clear at the beginning of the story, in fact, throughout the first pages, author Susan May Warren gives only bits and pieces here and there, in ominous allusions and flashbacks.

Alone on an icy road, Noelle is wrestling with a potentially life altering decision, when a freak accident wipes out her memory, including the past 20 years.
Now the couple find themselves face to face with the very thing they've been running away from - their painful past. As I read this book, I found myself putting myself in character Noelle's place, as she comes to terms with who she was, who she has become, and her reconciliation of the two. Throughout it all, I was rooting for their marriage to be restored, and for the proverbial happy ending.
I appreciate the development of all of the characters of this story. Any of their stories would lend itself to its own novel, and through it all, there is the gentle presence of the Lord and His redemption.
This is my first reading of a Susan May Warren book, and I would say that I enjoyed it and recommend it. An uplifting read :)

About the book:

The Shadow of Your SmileA beautiful blanket of snow may cover the quaint town of Deep Haven each winter, but it can’t quite hide the wreckage of Noelle and Eli Hueston’s marriage.
After twenty-five years, they’re contemplating divorce . . . just as soon as their youngest son graduates from high school. But then an accident erases part of Noelle's memory. Though her other injuries are minor, she doesn’t remember Eli, their children, or the tragedy that has ripped their family apart. What’s more, Noelle is shocked that her life has turned out nothing like she dreamed it would. As she tries to regain her memory and slowly steps into her role as a wife and mother, Eli helps her readjust to daily life with sometimes-hilarious, sometimes-heartwarming results. But can she fall in love again with a man she can’t remember?
Will their secrets destroy them . . . or has erasing the past given them a chance for a future? Read the story behind the story here: http://www.susanmaywarren.com/books/the-shadow-of-your-smile.

Maestro Classics - Swan Lake

I could wait until the end of this review to tell you how much our family adores Maestro Classics. I could tell you all about the dances that my little ladies have choreographed to these CD's. Or how my youngest giggles with delight at the antics of her favorite characters in Juanita the Spanish Lobster, and how my oldest eagerly anticipates the wolf's arrival on the scene in Peter and the Wolf. I might tell you how I love the sounds of the bagpipes and flute in Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel.

I could wait until the end...but I can't! The CD's from Maestro Classics are one of my most beloved resources in our homeschool. I honestly cannot think of  a better medium to introduce your children to the world of classical music than this company. Since we listened to the first beautiful melodies of Peter and the Wolf, our collection has grown, and I was thrilled - and so were my girls- to review The Story of Swan Lake. In fact, they had been asking me over and over when we would get Swan Lake.

For those of you who are not familiar with Maestro Classics, I'll share a bit about them now.

Husband and wife team Stephen Simon and Bonnie Ward Simon are the creators of this award winning series, whose purpose is to introduce children of all ages to classical music, and expand their musical horizons as it were :)

Through dramatic storytelling by narrator Yadu, these stories are brought to life in a marvelous  fashion. Each CD also features some nice extras, like the musician's background, told by Bonnie Ward Simon, an alternative version of the featured musical piece, and an additional song. There are even little activities for your young maestro within the CD sleeve.

You may already be acquainted with the storyline of Swan Lake. If not the basic plot is this...
A prince falls in love with a beautiful princess, but she has been turned into a swan by an evil magician, and only the prince's love can break the spell.

As I said, we loved this CD, and my youngest in particular has enjoyed all of the activities and music on it. There is one track in particular, Speed Metal Swan, that both girls have taken a fancy to. I think the title is self explanatory ;) I have to say, I like it too. Must be a throwback to my headbangin' 80's hairband days - hee hee.

I would encourage you to visit their website and hear some samples for yourself, and add 1- or 2 to your personal collection.
While you're at it, go over to their facebook page and "like" them to have the chance to enter a giveaway!

Z-Guide to the movies

I'm pretty sure that I must have said this somewhere before, but homeschoolers have a knack for using those everyday moments and activities and turning them into school lessons.
And, the resource I'm about to tell you about has made this even better for those of us in that camp too, and when I say easier, I mean, they've essentially done all of the work for us, leaving time to fully enjoy the activities. So let's get to it right now.

Welcome to Z-Guide to the movies, by Zeezok publishing, which is just what the title states- a guide to the movies. There are many great titles to choose from, geared to elementary, middle, and/or highschoolers.  For this review, we received Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, for the elementary/middle school grades.
(Let me quickly mention that Z-Guides  are available as a download, or as a CD. We have the download)

What you'll find inside:
Instructions on how to use the guide( helpful, yes? ;) ) There are 10 activities to complete over 5 days. For the first day, we looked over the basic information surrounding the time period that the movie is set in, the plot of the movie, and then watched Kit Kittredge, answering the questions for day/activity 1. I need to mention at this point that my 7 year old LOVED this part. She continually asked "What's the next question?"

The movie was barely over when my little ladies were clamoring for the next activity- researching The Great Depression. Of course, they love any excuse to get online ;) It was interesting, and a very good lesson to learn more about that time, and what people had to do to survive. Being on the younger side, I don't know how much 'stuck', but you have to start somewhere right?

For the rest of the activities, we did a little picking and choosing to suit the girls' age, and Z-Guide itself tells you to choose activities based on the age and interest of the child. So, while a few of the lessons were a little advanced, there were plenty left for us to use. We learned more about hobo signs and how they were used, vocabulary referring to the era, and fashion during that time period, which especially appealed to my youngest, the fashionista of the family.

The "Who Am I?" proved to be a popular guessing game with them too (I knew it would :)) They had to identify characters based on the given descriptions. Oh, they do love their games!

One of the things I love about my daughters- and I'm not bragging, honestly I'm not- is their automatic acceptance of everyone, no matter the race, appearance, disability, illness, whatever. I wouldn't say that my husband and I have necessarily gone out of their way to impress this upon them, although it does come up occasionally. I suppose it has more to do with the area that we live in and the natural diversity that exists here. All of that to say that for those reasons, the girls didn't get why a group of people would be treated as they were. It was a good lesson on the topic of prejudice.

At the end of the guide is a set of questions for family discussion. I always love hearing my daughters' viewpoint on various subjects, and they never cease to amaze me with their understanding and perspective.

Our overall thoughts:

We really liked this guide, and my oldest has already requested other titles in the series. What a great way to use a movie as a teaching opportunity. We heartily recommend this one!

The World's Greatest Stories

Audio stories are the best, don't you agree? I love using them as an alternative to television, long (or short) car rides, and for the kids to listen to as they fall asleep at night. If those stories are biblically based, that's even better, and that brings me to this week's TOS review.

The World's Greatest Stories are a wonderful collection of bible stories narrated by actor George W. Sarris.
No, that's not right. Narrated doesn't come close to being the right word. Mr. Sarris has beautifully and dramatically brought these bible stories to life in 6 different CD's:

Volume 1 - The Prophets
Volume 2 - The Life of Christ
Volume 3 - Beginnings
Volume 4 -  Joshua and Esther
Volume 5 - Joseph & His Brothers
Volume 6 - Defeating Giants

We were delighted to receive and review Volume 1 - The Prophets, which features these bible stories:
The Blazing Furnace - Daniel 3
The Handwriting on the Wall  - Daniel 5

Daniel in the Lion's Den - Daniel 6

Elijah & the Prophets of Baal  - 1Kings 17-18

The Prophecy of Jonah - The Book of Jonah

These CD's work for ages 4 and on up, but our whole family was captivated by Mr. Sarris' storytelling. He affects such wonderful accents for the characters, and his take on King Nebuchadnezzar is simply marvelous. The little ladies couldn't contain their giggles.

What a great way to listen to the bible! You'll also be interested to know that these CD's are so affordable, only $7.95 each, making them a super gift for all occasions. This makes us really happy, because at this rate, we'll have the whole set very soon!

Artistic Pursuits - Book One K-3

When it comes to the subject of art, the homeschooling parents I've talked with seem to fall into one of two camps. The first group either loves, loves, loves art, and goes all out in providing a wide variety of art materials, trips to museums, and so on for their students.
The second camp is made up of the *ahem*, artistically challenged. They may feel that they don't know what they're doing, or even where to begin in presenting an art lesson.

Now, I'm speaking in generalities of course, and  I also realize that there are plenty of folks who fall somewhere in between the two categories I've presented; I myself am one such person.

I love art. Spending an afternoon at the art museum just feeds my soul. In fact, and this may sound silly, but simply walking through the art store for an hour or two has a similiar effect on me. I can't explain it, perhaps it's the possibilities that the oil pastels, paints, brushes, etc. represent.

That said, I often find myself at a loss at where to begin when it comes to teaching this subject. And then along came a most delightful art curriculum - Artistic Pursuits.

This is what I've been looking for all this time. An introduction to a variety of art mediums and techniques, an introduction to art history, all geared towards the age of my daughters, and therefore easy to understand.

Upon opening this wonderfully thick, spiral bound book, is a handy list of the necessary art materials. So helpful!

The book we're using (Book 1, for K-3rd grade) is divided into three sections:

*WHAT ARTISTS DO

*WHAT ARTISTS SEE

*WHERE WE FIND ART

It is suggested by the author/teacher to have plenty of interesting objects to observe and sketch - goldfish, shells, bowls of fruit, small caged animals, and/or just going outside. And being a homeschooling family lends itself to a myriad of interesting possibilities in this regard, as we're not limited to the classroom! Just sayin'.

Let me show you what a typical lesson looks like. It begins with an overview of the topic, which might be what it means for an artist to compose a picture, or how nature inspires him/her.
Next is a simple exercise for the student to do, maybe a discussion or a walk outside. After that, it's time to take a close look at the featured painting or other work of art from the lesson and talk about it, the colors, subjects, perhaps some of the artists background.

Now the best part of all...let's create our own work of art! Each lesson features a particular art medium, and after a brief explanation of its purpose and how to use it, we get to try it for ourselves :)

I"m not exaggerating in the least when I say that from the first project, the whole family was hooked. *I* had been excited from the moment that I opened the book and saw the depth of the lessons, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how my ladies took to it all, art history included.
Of course, their favorite part is the hands on drawing, painting, creating aspect, and we did MANY pictures for each assignment. Especially when the medium is watercolor crayons. They are wildly popular in this house now.

I suppose that I'm stating the obvious when I say that we love this curriculum. It's the whole package in one easy, simple to teach, format. I would recommend Artistic Pursuits to anyone and everyone looking for a good at home art program.

Great Commission Languages - The Easy French

Laissez les bon temps roulez! Or, to put it in plain English ;) - "Let the good times roll!" Introducing my daughters to the French language has me so excited! I absolutely love this language, so when I was selected to use Le Francais Facile! with them over the past month or so, I was happily shouting Oh la la!

What we've been using:

Le Francais Facile! (The Easy French!)
Junior Level - for ages K-3rd grade

We received a thick, spiral bound book which includes 2 CD's, one of which has enhanced audio play, allowing you to listen over the computer, and also has a LOT of worksheets and extras to print off for your students. Within the first few pages is an exhaustive list of good resources, books and DVD's to expand your understanding of the French culture.

About the lessons:

Every lesson begins with an audio portion. The script is in both French and English, and repetitive enough to help the student get the basic idea of what is going on. Following the audio is the vocabulary for that lesson. Then it's activity time! I love the note that can be found throughout the lessons - "This curriculum was designed for you, not you for the curriculum!" Meaning...there are many activities to choose from, but you decide which ones will fit the time and interests of your children.

One of the ongoing activities that we have been doing is the C'est Moi! Livre (It's Me! Book) There is a page-sometimes 2- for each lesson, a page to color, something to draw, to extend the lesson. As the girls complete them, we put them in a binder, and they sure are proud of their work so far!

Also included in the lessons are 'cultural notes' about life and times of the French people, and sometimes recipes and games.

Our thoughts:

C'est Magnifique! We love this program! The lessons are fun and engaging, and is designed to work with a variety of ages. I have *some* experience with the French language, but a family with no exposure can do well with this also.
I really love that this curriculum allows me to print out what I need for each student, without having to purchase additional workbooks. That makes it a wonderful value right there.

The girlies are loving their increasing knowledge of the language. They frequently practice their vocabulary, and are now very aware of anything that suggests an origin of France. Their enthusiasm for this product speaks volumes of its effectiveness.

Visit Great Commission Languages at their website and see if this is a good fit for your family too :)
