Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Journey Homeschool Academy - A Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way.

Teaching high school can seem a daunting task for many homeschooling parents. The thoughts of college are looming closer at this stage of education, and talk revolves around required courses, credits, and transcripts. The good, if not great news is, that there are some wonderful resources to help homeschool parents in our weaker areas. Consider high school science for example. It tends to be a subject that parents are either enthusiastic about teaching, or one that fills them with anxiety. I've enjoyed most of the science courses that we've used over the years, but I will admit that the Biology course we used this last year had my, and my teens' heads, spinning. As it happened, Journey Homeschool Academy provided us with the opportunity to take and review their course, Experience Biology: Upper Level , and I'm here to say up front, you need to check it out, because it's fantastic.

Luke and Trisha Gilkerson are the instructors for this biblically centered course, and I cannot express enough enthusiasm for their style and manner. They know their stuff, so to speak, and their passion is contagious. Even in the sign up process, they were attentive, detailed, and encouraging.

Student guidebook, and table of contents.

This upper level Biology class can be taken one of two ways. The Basic level is a non-credit option, and includes 35 weeks of video lessons, lecture guide, readings, research questions, quizzes, and tests. The advanced option includes all of those, but also includes labs, with video instruction and assignments to upload. Quizzes and tests are automatically graded for students, as are the submitted lab questions. That takes a lot of the burden off of parents, doesn't it? We received access to the advanced level. Upon completion of the advanced class, students will earn 1 full credit and recieve a certificate of completion. We did not receive the textbook that accompanies the course, The Riot and the Dance. You can choose to purchase the book if you like, and you'll need it to complete the reading assignments, but you can complete the course without it. I would however, recommend getting a copy.

Engaging videos, 2 per week.

The set up process is straightforward and simple. Your child will ideally need their own email account to receive reminders and such. After registering, you will select from several start dates. Once you choose the date, your student will have one year to finish the course. Apart from having to select a date to begin, the course is self paced. You can move along faster or slower, as long as it's within that timeframe of a year.

Student book includes new vocabulary and lecture notes.

Lab assignment example. This course does not include a microscope or other lab supplies. Those need to be purchased separately.

Typically, students will work through one chapter per week, working faster or slower as necessary. In order to move from one chapter to the next, you must check off the boxes for each required section. These will be checked off as you watch the videos, read the assignments, and complete the labs. After all the boxes are checked, the next section is unlocked.

All boxes must be completed and checked before moving on to the next.

Students begin by watching two separate videos. Lessons are taught by Luke Gilkerson. He has a wonderful teaching style. There are very good photos, graphics, and other illustrations. His demeanor is good natured and relaxed. I found myself looking forward to learning about things such as cell respiration, and I'll tell you, the subject is not my thing, lol. After the videos, they will complete the reading assignment, take the quiz, and complete research questions. They will also complete the lab. If you're taking the course at the expected pace, you'll complete one section per weekday.

In my musings of how to describe our feelings for this course, I'm thinking, super, fabulous, engaging, interesting, fantastic, and wow, I wish we had discovered this class sooner! I really hope that they put together more courses before my daughters graduate. We had just come to the end of our biology class (not this one), before this review, but my daughter will still finish this course as well. It's just that good.

Are you feeling a bit stressed, about teaching biology? I encourage you to visit their website and see what this course is all about. I think you'll like it too!

The Power of Yet

I love this photo. The Power of Yet. I'm thinking about this as we get ready to welcome another school year. This is the time of year when my teens are busy preparing for band auditions. There is a daily cacophony of musical notes floating through the house. And every year, there come s a point where each of my daughters is brought to the brink of frustration because they just can't get a particular piece of music played correctly. But something miraculous happens just after auditions are over. They begin playing those pieces with ease, declaring, "I can't believe I thought that was difficult!"

So it is with much of life. We're faced with a variety of challenges. They can seem daunting. Then we manage to climb over the steep hill, sometimes gritting our teeth the entire way. But we get there, and what a sense of accomplishment. The power of yet.

Our First Artichoke!

I’m very happy! For years, I’ve wanted to try my hand at growing artichokes. After a long winter, a packet of seeds, a lot of dirt, sunlight, and water, the first little one appeared this weekend. Hurray!

Scripture Writing Challenge

This isn't my photo, but I love the challenge. Have you ever done something like this? What a great way to meditate on Scripture. This would be good for copy work for your students too. What do you think?

Progeny Press - A Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way.

Do you remember any of the books that you read in your high school literature class? I recall a few, and I can't say that I enjoyed the selections. A few years ago, when I was deciding which course my oldest daughter would take during her freshman year, I was less than impressed with the suggested books. That's when a lightbulb turned on for me. As a homeschooler, I had the final say in our literature studies. The question was, what do I choose? Thanks to Progeny Press , who came to my rescue with their study e-guides from a Christian perspective. All I had to do was pick a book, grab a guide, and get to work. A couple of years later, I remain a fan, and I was excited to receive two more study e-guides to use and review, the  Animal Farm Study Guide , and the Little Women Study Guide .

Michael and Rebecca Gilleland are the founders of this company. I appreciate their mission- "to teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on the Scriptures for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!" What wonderful goals! You know what else is wonderful? Their study guides! Let me tell you about our two. I'll begin with an overview of each story, and then what the individual guides provide.

Just in case I didn't make it clear, these are digital study guides. The books are not included, you'll have to purchase or borrow your own copies. I love the convenience of these. They come in the handy pdf's, so I don't have to wait for shipping and delivery notices. I can just download and get started. I don't even have to print if I don't want to, because this is interactive, so we can type our work right into the pages. It doesn't get too much easier than that.

The stories:
Animal Farm tells of a revolution that comes about when a group of farm animals turn against their farmer, Mr. Jones. They are lead by two literate pigs, Napolean and Snowball, who are at first, good leaders, with all of the animals working for the common good and equality of all. Circumstances go awry when some animals become "more equal than others", and the corruption and power struggle begin.
The book was written by George Orwell, and as an aside, it's frighteningly relatable for our time. The target grades are 9-12. There are 93 pages. You can plan on working through the material in roughly 8-10 weeks, depending on your schedule. So, if you complete four different books and guides, you'll have your literature course all set.

Little Women was written by Louisa May Alcott. It is the story of the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. They live with their loving mother in the Civil War era. Their father is away, as a chaplain. It's a story that details the lives of each young woman and how they make their way into the world. It's a classic story with love, laughter, grief, and survival. I love it, sigh.
This guide is 94 pages long, and targeted for grades 8-12. Like Animal Farm, it can be completed in 8-10 weeks or so.

Both guides follow the same format. A table of contents lays out all of the work, and it's very simple to follow. Sections are divided into several chapters. The guide includes a synopsis of the story, background information of the author, and helpful information about the book's time, setting, and cultural references.

Worksheets include fill in the blank questions, vocabulary, as well as lessons that teach about aspects of writing, including similes, metaphors, proverbs, etc.. As the guides represent a Christian worldview, there are passages of Scripture to read, meditate on, and compare with various chapters in the books. Then, there are optional activities for chapters that include cooking projects, crafts, science, and more.

Did I mention that I love these guides? They are a fantastic way to make literature pop in your homeschool, co-op, or book club. Students with a range of learning styles will benefit from them. We've looked at the high school offerings, as we have teens, but Progeny Press offers guides for virtually every age group, so families can find selections that will span multiple grade levels. We'll be using these this year, and likely for the rest of our high school days. Check out this wonderful company. Also, read the other Homeschool Crew reviews as they have tried out other titles that may be of interest to you. Happy reading!

MaxScholar - A Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any other way.

MaxScholar is an online reading program that implements a variety of learning styles to teach and reinforce reading, writing, and comprehension. Students with learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADHD are among those who can benefit from the multi sensory approach used in this program. Children from the early years of PreK, and up through High School will learn and reinforce the basics of Reading that will help them in their studies. Our family was given a 6 month subscription to their MaxScholar Orton-Gillingham Software to use and review. Read on and I'll share it with you.

You'll notice the product is called Orton Gillingham Software, and the reason for this is that MaxScholar uses this style of teaching in their program. For those that may not be familiar with the name or its philosophy, here are just a few facts...

The Orton Gillingham approach:

- Is named after neuropsychiatrist and pathologist Samuel T. Orton, and educator and psychologist           Anna Gillingham. Between the two of them, they were experts in understanding reading                    difficulties, and processing problems. They were in fact, pioneers of their time in bringing these          issues to light.
- Is especially helpful for students with Dyslexia and/or other learning disabilities.
- Is multisensory, sequential, structured in practice.
- Focuses on individual learning.

There is much more information to be found about Orton Gillingham that you can research on your own, but it provides the foundation that MaxScholar is built upon. Now, on to the program itself.

The dashboard is easy to navigate. Choose your module, and click on the icon.

When you purchase a subscription, each student receives their own license. The lessons are self paced, so you can begin and end when you like, on any device. Getting set up is very simple, and there are a series of video tutorials that will walk you through each step. When signing up students, there is a placement test for them to take if you aren't sure where to put them. If you already know their level, you can easily go to your teacher dashboard and manually put in the grade without taking the test. Once you complete this part, you're ready to begin.

MaxMusic will be a favorite for older students.

MaxVocab has levels all the way up to college.

MaxPlaces will throw in some Geograpy and History along with your Reading lessons.

MaxBios will introduce students to a variety of well known folks.

These are the individual modules that you can choose from:

- MaxPhonics - for your PreK and/or early elementary students - learn consonants, short vowels,           blends, digraphs
- MaxReading - students will read excerpts according to their grade level. They will learn to highlight   important points, create outlines, complete a writing exercise, and answer questions to determine         comprehension.
- MaxWords will have students learn spelling rules, prefixes, suffixes, as well as Latin and Greek         roots.
- MaxMusic - students will love this one. Choose an artist, read song lyrics, and then complete the         related exercises.
- MaxVocab - learn new vocabulary words, their definitions, and then play a few games with those       words.
- MaxPlaces- select one of the highlighted points on the map, read a passage relating to the location,     and answer comprehension questions.
- MaxBios - choose from a list of well known people, read about their lives and contributions, and         complete the exercises.

A sample of Vocab, level 11.

Enjoy a Word Search after lessons.

Students will learn how to highlight important parts of a text.

We need those questions to test comprehension.

Every step of the way, you'll appreciate the clear instructions provided.

I love that this is a program that can be used by the entire family. The material is such that it will grab the attention even for bored teens, like one of mine, lol. We happen to be on our summer break, but the structure of MaxScholar allows us to pick it up throughout the week, and engage in some extra practice. The fact that it's self paced is also a winning aspect for me. We don't have to stick to a rigid schedule, rather, we can switch it up if necessary to accommodate what seems to be a constantly changing schedule. I'm pleased with the skills that are taught. Reading and writing are so important in school of course, but just as much as adults. This is a program that we'll continue to use as our new school year begins next month. Are you prepping for your school year? Consider taking a look at MaxScholar.

Happy Independence Day!

It’s the 4th of July weekend in the United States Like most of this year, everyone has had to adjust their typical holiday plans. The lack of parades and organized fireworks shows was conspicuous, but our town, like many, made it a festive day anyway. How did you celebrate?
