Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Abel's Field

About Abel's Field
Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light.

Wow, just wow. I loved this movie! This film shattered all of my preconceived notions. If you're expecting a cheesy, so/so clean, but corny movie in Abel's Field, SORRY! Not here. I read the teaser, looked at the cast of characters, and thought I had it basically figured out. The main character- Seth, plays his role beautifully; the motherless teen caring for his young sisters, struggling, bullied, treated unfairly, yet pressing on through it all.
I expected a young kid with the usual chip on his shoulder, who then meets with the cliche gruff older father figure, and then sees the error of his ways...blah, blah, blah.
I was impressed to see a good clean movie with good acting, and a Christian message that while subtle, stood out. I was rooting for Seth from the start.
Kevin Sorbo plays Abel, the quiet groundskeeper who seems to be one of only a few to "get" Seth, and gently steers the teen toward the Truth. The film reaches the height of tension as both characters look as if they will lose everything that they have been fighting to save.
I really enjoyed the play on the movie's title towards the end. It was an unexpected twist that kind of tied everything up in a satisfying manner.
I'd love to tell you what that twist is, but what fun would that be? Go get this on DVD and watch it this weekend!
