Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Drive Thru History® Adventures - Bible Unearthed - A Crew Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for  my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

We are longtime fans of Drive Thru History® Adventures in this household. Through the fascinating courses of this program, Dave Stotts of the above mentioned Adventures has been our tour guide to sites all over the world. We've journeyed to the Middle East and watched the Gospels brought to life, we've observed what the lives of the early Christians were like, visited the Mediterranean region as we studied ancient history, and discovered our roots as we took a virtual look at the birth of the United States of America. It's been engaging, amazing, hilarious, heart wrenching, and awesome. Our studies of these topics have always left us ready for another educational escapade, and here it is! We were given Lifetime Access to their latest course, Bible Unearthed, to use and review this past month, and I'm pleased to tell you about it.

Bible Unearthed focuses on archaeology. Students will learn the significance and history that is found through this subject.
Those of you who are familiar with the Drive Thru series will see that this latest course, Bible Unearthed, has a different format than the others. Dave Stotts is still a host, but here he is joined by Drive Thru History writer Randall Niles, and archaeology expert Titus Kennedy, PhD. The video portion finds the three sitting around a table with Kennedy taking the main lead in discussions.

Videos are about 15 minutes or so.

There are 12 "Adventures" to work through in order to complete the course. You'll find a weekly schedule to follow to help structure your week. It is self paced though, so it's fine if you work a bit faster or slower. If you do follow the course guide, students will tackle one Adventure per week.

Topics covered in this course:

Episode 1 - What is Archaeology?
Episode 2 - The Impact of Archaeology
Episode 3 - Locating Archaeological Sites
Episode 4 - The Life of an Archaeologist
Episode 5 - What's Being Discovered Today?
Episode 6 - Archaeological Mysteries
Episode 7 - Top Discoveries in Bible Archaeology
Episode 8 - Getting Involved with Archaeology
Episode 9 - Trends in Archaeology
Episode 10 - Weird Archaeology
Episode 11 - Accidental Discoveries in Archaeology
Episode 12 - Whats Left to be Discovered?

There is also an additional resource that you can add to these studies, especially if like me, you're using this with high school students. Titus Kennedy has a new book out, called Unearthing the Bible, and you can purchase it separately to go with the course. Being the book fanatics that we are, we did, and it's really good!

The way that you approach the class will differ depending on the age of your children. If you have younger ones, you may decide to simply watch the videos. Older ones will be able to tackle more, so you can have them read the articles, complete the worksheets, and any additional activities. This is what a sample week might look like if you include all of the assignments:

Monday: Watch the episode. Read the written exposition/breakout materials.

Tuesday: Complete the optional activity, if there is one.

Wednesday: Read the Dig Deeper articles, and research if there is any to complete.

Thursday: Review Day, watch the episode again, look over the readings.

Friday: Complete the worksheet, check your answers.

Written expositions enhance the video lessons.

Weird and cool archaeology - the Easter Island heads.

In our excitement to start our Adventures, we initially sped up our pace. We went through our first viewings of the videos in two weeks, lol. Now we're backing up again for a more thoughtful study, and using all of the digging deeper features.

This is a Biblically based course, so you'll find regular Scripture readings included here.

Dig Deeper articles are insightful.

Now, what do we think of this latest venture? I'll start with my oldest, the 16 year. To come right out with it, she dislikes most school. She'll do it, but with the exception of a very few subjects, she would rather not, ha. So, imagine my delighted surprise when she came out with enthusiastic praise for Bible Unearthed!
In her words, it took an episode or two to adjust to the different format of this course versus other Drive Thru History series', but she found the lessons interesting and insightful. You would have to know her to understand, but that is a big compliment, especially since she generally avoids the subject of history as much as possible.

Example of the worksheets. This semester is fairly writing intensive for us, so we've been using them as an out loud discussion guide. My 16 year old seems to retain more information this way too.

The accompanying answer guide for the worksheets.

My youngest, the 15 year old, is also a big fan of Drive Thru, and particularly loves the humor that Dave Stotts brings to the table. She also is really enjoying reading Kennedy's book Unearthing the Bible, and my husband has already put in his claim to read it next.

I love it for many reasons. The short answer is, it isn't boring. Interesting videos, infused with humor, well written articles that are written in a way that isn't stuffy and boring, colorful photos, and engaging activities, all contribute to a fascinating course. Simply put, it piques one's curiosity.

For those that sign up for the course, there is a Facebook discussion group where members can discuss topics and share ideas. It's a great community, and you'll enjoy even more content.
Suffice it to say, we continue to love our experiences with this company. We've enjoyed our virtual travels, and we look forward to hopefully, many more! As far as our family is concerned, this is a curriculum that is a must have.
