Deuteronomy 6:6-7

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. ~ Deuteronomy 6:6-7

The Master's Mind , by Lance Hahn

How is your thought life? Have you ever stopped to consider the importance of the way that you speak to yourself? The Bible has some things to say about our internal state of being.  Luke 6:45 says "The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." (ESV)

In his book, The Master's Mind, The Art of Reshaping Your Thoughts, author Lance Hahn offers his insight into taking control of our thought life, with the goal being a mind aligned with Christ. I received a free copy of this book, in exchange for my honest opinion. It was the title that first caught my eye. "The Art of Reshaping Your Thoughts". Speaking for myself, this is a daily battle. A little bit of negative self talk has the power to ruin my attitude.

Hahn suggests that the battle for our minds goes back to The Garden of Eden, when sin entered the world. Since then, mankind has had an identity crisis. The problem is, we often choose a wrong identity. Throughout the book, the author presents various scenarios that lay out where we tend to seek our worth, and why those places are wrong. It's only when we repent, and realign our lives to follow the biblical path that God has set for us, that we find our true identity. As the Scripture commands us, we need to put off the old, the sinful, and put on the new, the godly habits.

Now, I could give you these examples, but then there would be no point in you reading the book for yourself. If you, like so many others, struggle with thoughts of anxiety, insecurity, doubt, and the list goes on, The Master's Mind might be a good book to point you in the best direction, to the Lord. Until next time,

Where is the alligator?

I would like to introduce you to a very special member of our family. This adorable little hairball is our Yorkshire Terrier, Crosby.

He's not only cute, he's quite entertaining, and like most dogs, he loves to chew. I used to give him those rawhide chewies, but stopped after hearing enough about the negative effects they can have. So, I decided to stick with vet approved suggestions. A few weeks ago, I was in a pet supply store, and came across these cute dental chews for dogs. They had a variety of sizes, depending on the size of your dog, and even more fun, they're shaped like alligators!

Well, I was certain that Crosby would love to have one of these to wrap his teeth around, so I bought two, one for him, and one for our Chihuahua, Chloe. I couldn't wait to give it to him. But, as it turns out, he wasn't interested in chewing it. He sniffed it for a bit, picked it up, and spent the next twenty minutes or so looking for a place to hide it. He then stole Chloe's alligator, and hid hers too! It's become the joke in our household, "Where will we find the alligator today?" He's hidden it in many different spots, and every time we find it, he picks it up, and hides it again. So far, the best spot was this week. My daughter was getting ready for bed, and was just getting comfy, when she stuck her hand under her pillow, and what did she find?

I love this little dog! Where will he hide it next? I'll keep you posted!

Kid Niche Christian Books - Weave Your Word In Me --Part 1

What is the most important part of your child's education? If you align yourself with the Christian faith, a solid Bible course is probably at the  top of the list. As a follower of Jesus Christ, my desire is for them to not only learn the fundamentals of the faith, but to be motivated to live their lives for Him. Prayer is a vital part of our Christian walk, and  we had the chance to review a course for upper elementary students focusing on just that,  Weave Your Word In Me -- Part 1  by Kid Niche Christian Books.

There are two parts to this resource, and we received Part one. It arrived as a packet alone, but with pre-punched holes, allowing it to be placed in a binder. It is made up of 36 bright and colorful lessons for the tween ages. Using The Lord's Prayer as it's template, this Bible study and prayer guide uses a rhythmical prayer called My Whole Self Before You. It breaks down each verse and translates it into language that is easier for students to understand.

How does it work? It's pretty easy to understand, as all instructions are clearly laid out in an aesthetically pleasing way. Very colorful, lots of illustrations. Honestly,  if your student can read, they can follow this independently. These lessons are compatible with the following Bible translations:

King James Version - KJV
English Standard Version - ESV
New King James Version - NKJV
New International Version - NIV
New American Standard Bible - NASB
New American Bible Revised Edition - NABRE

After selecting your Bible version of choice, it's time to dig into God's Word! Lessons have Bible verses to look up and read. Using those verses, your student will learn more details surrounding a specific passage, allowing her to understand the meaning in a deeper way. Throughout the lesson, she will fill in the blanks, put events in chronological order, and sometimes draw a picture. The assignments end with a fill in the blank prayer, which the author encourages the student to recite after completing. As a side note, that last prayer is always found on the left side of the page, written vertically, so it's easy to fill in the blanks for that one. It was actually my daughter who noticed that first, and pointed it out to me.

A few photos of the lessons:

Our thoughts on Weave Your Word In Me - Part 1 :

Visually, we love it! It's bright colors are beautiful. We put ours in a hot pink binder, and love the way it looks. Even the younger tween ages should be able to follow the instructions without problems, as everything is laid out so clearly. Now on to what's really important, the content. We used this 4, sometimes 5 days a week. My daughter is twelve, and after the first couple of lessons, worked through this independently. She has been enjoying working through  the material, and a lesson that focused on the temptation of Jesus really stood out for her. She appreciated the background information provided for the text, as well as comparisons that display how Satan tried to lure Jesus to follow him, and then what Jesus did to refute Satan. The only downside (and I don't know that it could even be called a downside) that my daughter brought up, was that she found the work a bit too easy. Being twelve, she is on the high end of the target age, so for the younger ages, this should be a great resource. It could be of great use to students learning to follow a study. As for my girlie, she found it to be a great supplement to her other Bible studies. So all in all, no complaints for this household. Easy Roast Beef

Hey busy Moms,

Do you struggle to plan meals that taste great, and are easy to prepare? I know that I do. This recipe that I'm sharing with you has been a lifesaver on many occasions. The whole family loves this meal, and it  only requires a few ingredients that you probably keep stocked in your pantry. Throw them together in the slow cooker, and dinner takes care of itself in an afternoon. The gravy is so good over mashed potatoes. Are you ready for what may be the easiest Roast Beef recipe ever? Here it is...

Ingredients:

Eye of the round beef roast - I usually get one that's about 2 1/2 lbs.
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 envelope dry onion soup mix
1/3 cup beef broth

Directions:

Put roast in slow cooker. Mix mushroom soup, dry soup, and beef broth in a small bowl. Pour over roast. Cover and cook on low 5-7 hours, depending on size of roast, and your slow cooker. Mine typically takes about 5 hours.

Once the roast beef is done, I remove it from the gravy, cover with foil, and let it rest about 15 minutes. Then, I strain the gravy, as my family likes it to be smooth, but that's up to you. I also slice the roast and put it back in the gravy, and serve it with mashed potatoes, a vegetable, and salad. This is always met with a lot of enthusiasm from my family. And it's so easy! Five minutes of prep, and it makes the house smell wonderful as it cooks. I hope you'll give it a try!

The Pencil Grip, Inc. - A Review

I have a confession to make, and it's kind of a strange one. I love writing implements. I mean, I love
them. Pens, pencils, erasers...all different kinds, colors, and styles. I cannot get enough of them. My pencil case is bursting with them, with the zipper protesting as I try to close it. Even so,  I  don't think that I could stop collecting anytime that I wanted to, lol. For that reason alone, I was pretty happy to do a review for The Pencil Grip, Inc.. Our family received two products, the 3 Step Grip Development Training Kit , and the Ultra Safe Scissors for free, in exchange for my honest review.

As you can see from the photo above, there are three "Grips" in the pencil kit. The varied colors and designs are not simply for the aesthetic value. Each color represents one of three steps. Steps, you ask? What do you mean? Well, I'm glad you asked! Let me tell you about them.

The Green Grip is designed for children working on Step 1. This is the Crossover Grip, used in the training stage. It has what looks like a cute little superhero cape that rests over the child's fingers, to maintain correct positioning. You'll notice that with its design, it provides little to no room for smaller fingers to slip out of place.

Step 2, or , the Red Grip, is the transition grip, also called the Pinch Grip. The "cape" is diminished, but still has "wings" to allow the child to watch their grip, as well as maintain placement. There is slightly more room to wiggle.

Last but not least, is the Blue Grip, or The Pencil Grip Original. This is good for anyone and everyone. Once a child has mastered finger placement, this grip offers the ability to write in comfort, while still keeping finger placement in proper alignment. As an added bonus, all of these are both latex and phthalate free.

It's good to note that  these are only suggested steps, you can choose which Grip feels the most comfortable to use.

Now, part two of our review products, The Ultra Safety Scissors.

Designed for ages 3 and up, these really are the ultimate safety scissors. Looking at the photo above, you'll notice a clear plastic shield that goes pretty much from blade to blade. This is designed to be permanent, and prevents your child from cutting themselves. There is a very thin opening, where paper is inserted to be cut. The blades are also blunt, and there is a small yellow spring. This spring is adjustable. You can move it down, so that it will automatically pop open after cutting, which is helpful for little ones just beginning to learn how to use their hands to open and close scissors. It can also lay flat, for those that have mastered this skill.

Our thoughts on both of these products:

Our household is past the preschool age, by about 10 years now, so my girls have established their pencil grip. But like me, they were happy to give them a try and offer their opinion. We started with the Pencil Grips.

The girls liked the soft, squishy texture, as well as the individual designs. Next came the actual pencil gripping. They used them in order, naturally, and liked the little cape.

They found the first grip awkward, and without the freedom to move their fingers, but that is the idea of its design- to keep new writers in proper position.

They found the second grip a little more comfy, and less restrictive.

Now the third one was the clear winner. The girls found it comfortable, but allows enough movement to feel unrestricted. I would add that I think the reason that they find the first two awkward are due to the fact that they are established in their pen and pencil gripping capabilities. These should be great with children that are learning the fine motor skills necessary in writing.

As for the Ultra Safety Scissors, the general thoughts are the same. These would be helpful for preschoolers learning to use those muscles needed to open and close scissors, and the adjustable spring allows for progression. It also prevents not only accidental clipping of fingers, but unfortunate haircuts, lol. That clear shield that protects also has a downsize however. It takes some solid fine motor skills to fit a piece of paper into that thin opening, and that could be a challenge.

Overall, these look like great products for your younger students, and I would encourage you to give them a try! See you all next time!

Mostly Wordless Wednesday

The theme of today's Wordless Wednesday is "A Day At The Fair". This weekend, we had a great time visiting an Old English Faire, complete with a tour of a castle. Enjoy our pics!

Wordless Wednesday

Well, this post is really a day late, and at the moment, I cannot think of an illiteration for Thursday that sounds as good as Wordless Wednesday. Getting back to the post, our family continues to enjoy exploring our new city, and the surrounding area. This weekend, we participated in a local farm stroll. In case you 've never heard of such a thing, several farms choose a day to offer tours, samples, and an informative glimpse into their work. It was a lot of fun, and we met some wonderful people. But since this was supposed to be wordless, here are some photos from our travels. Enjoy.

Jeremy Camp - THE ANSWER (A Review)

Raise your hand if you're a Jeremy Camp fan! Hey, me too! So being a fan, I was happy to receive a copy of his new CD, THE ANSWER, for free, in exchange for an honest review.
From the first song, I knew that this was going to be a great album. There's a good chance that you have already heard the first track, Word of Life. In my opinion, it's Jeremy Camp at his best.
I've always been a fan of his rich vocals, strong melodies, and uplifting message.

There are many Christian artists that I love to listen to, and they all proclaim Christ. What stands out to me in Jeremy Camp's music, is his ability to strike a balance between rocking out, and reverence. I mean, the songs make me want to move, but there is worship going on simultaneously.
Even in an uptempo track like My Defender or The Answer, the testimony that he brings to the lyrics is unbelievable. Seriously, I was driving down the highway as I first listened to this album, and if I could have lifted both hands in praise to God, I would have. I'm grateful that Mr. Camp shares his gift with us!

I can already choose at least a couple of songs here that I could see being incorporated into many church services. At the very least, this compilation ministered to me personally, and I will be keeping it in regular rotation. I'm confident that the majority of you would agree. I hope that you'll check it out, because I give this two thumbs up.
