Artistic Pursuits Inc. is a company that our family has been fans of for many years now. They offer a wide range of art courses for virtually every age. This time around, we've had the pleasure of using and reviewing their course, Sculpture Technique, Construct .
This introduction to sculpture art course is intended for grades 6 through 12. It is a full year course, with students earning 1 credit upon completion. The curriculum is presented in a physical softcover, spiral bound book. Here are the units:
- Unit 1: Creating Form in Papermaking
- Unit 2: Creating Planes in Cardboard
- Unit 3: Creating Motion in Paper Mache
- Unit 4: Creating Volume with Wire
Classroom schedule |
The text is written in a conversational tone, and most students will find it easy to follow. A list of supplies is included in the front of the book. Students on the younger side of the age range will probably require some assistance, but most high schoolers will be able to work independently. Colorful photos and illustrations are included in each unit, and provide examples as well as instruction. Templates are included in the back of the book for certain projects. Hurray for not having to make your own! After completing each unit, evaluations are done, where students will record successes, difficulties, and how they felt about the overall process.

Ideally, you would work through this book in order from the first unit and through the fourth. However, as all of you know, unless of course you've been living in a cave in the wilderness, that the global lockdowns over the past months caused more than a little interference. Because of that, there were some supplies that we couldn't get our hands on easily. So we did what we could with what we could find, substituting some items, and skipping around in the book a bit. Instead of starting with Unit 1, which began with papermaking, we moved to Unit 2, which is creating planes in cardboard.

My 14 year old has been working through the book. At first, she wasn't sure how much she would enjoy the projects. Sculpting with clay and other similar mediums are projects that she loves, but constructing left her wondering. She does like projects that involve papermaking, so the model making in unit 2 held promise. We managed to track down some corrugated cardboard, albeit smaller than what we wanted, but with some adjustments, it was adequate. We subbed in some heavy cardstock and textured paper. Stores are starting to open up again, and amazon delivery times are improving too, so we're looking forward to backtracking to unit 1 and getting those projects going.

I love that Artistic Pursuits is a physical product, and is put together in such a way that we could jump ahead a bit. We love this curriculum as much as we have in the past, and look forward to moving on to the sculpting course, which comes next. Our homeschool style is kind of a relaxed traditional. We like structure, and completing assignments in a timely, scheduled way, while allowing ourselves to slow down or speed up as we like. This format allows us to do just that.
Our Crew members reviewed a variety of art courses for a variety of ages, so check those out as well, and see which one would be a good fit!
